The Right Way of Handling N1 Furniture Removals

Posted on 02/09/2014

When it comes to a move, safety is key, especially if you are doing things without the help of a professional removals team, as when using a N1 man and van service, you will probably be utilizing a couple of mates to help out, and they will probably not be trained in the various techniques for heavy lifting that a remover will be. This in mind, it can be seriously painful if you slip a disk in your back, or crack a shoulder while carrying a heavy box, not to mention dropping a sofa on your toe! There are all sorts of ways to make sure that your move is a successful one, but only good planning and research will show you the right way of handling N1 furniture removals.

Start by planning your move N1 well in advance f the big day. It will take some serious discipline to get on with a job that will probably feel like it is way off, but it is totally necessary if you want to make the most of your time. Having everything packed and ready to before the van arrives is a great way to reduce the time that you spend on the clock with the man and van, which can reduce your costs significantly. Giving your mates a couple of notes on how to lift things properly is a must, or just taking them through it yourself is OK as well. These techniques include keeping your back straight and using your knees to lift things, so that you do not bend your back that much. Another great safety tip that will make the lifting a lot more easy in general is to always wear special gloves that have a rubberized and grippy surface on the palms. This will protect the hands from rashes, splinters or burns from friction with certain objects, they will also prevent sweaty palms affecting how well you can keep hold of something, so that there is no fear of something heavy suddenly slipping and going crashing down the stairs! Wearing steel toed boots will protect your toes should something fall on them, and you can sometimes use heavy boots like this as a tool, as sometimes a little kick will get something out of a tight space, or into a corner, in a way that pushing will not. Don’t try to do as such with normal shoes on however!

A major part of keeping things safe during the process of moving things down to the van, or into the new house, is communication. You will find that you may have to walk backwards whilst carrying certain things, and if you have no idea as to what is behind you, then you may get into some serious trouble. The best way to avoid this is to have the other person carrying whatever it is that you are moving, warn you as to obstacles that you may not have seen. Announcing yourself as you come through a door will prevent collisions with others coming in through the other way, and letting people know if you are putting down a cable or object on the floor will stop them tripping over it later if they weren’t expecting it!

Getting hold of a sack barrow or trolley will also make things more safe and efficient, as it will reduce the amount of men needed to lift certain items, as it will take much of the weight itself, so it is worth perhaps renting one if possible.
