One of the main issues you might face when moving into a smaller home is with your belongings. There are many reasons as to why someone may want or need to downsize in terms of living space. You could be moving out of your family home into an apartment of your own. Alternatively, you may be living on your own after a split with a partner or spouse, or just decide not to share a place with your friends anymore. No matter what the reason, you may find that you have too many belongings to take with you to your new home.
What do you then do with your belongings? Well this article aims to give you a few ideas which you may want to pursue.
Of course, the first thing you need to do is go through your stuff and decide on all the belongings that you do not necessarily need, want or even like. This could be in the form of unwanted gifts or items that are broken.
Of course, anything broken or not working needs to be gotten rid of in the appropriate way. Recycle anything that is recyclable and make sure that items such as car batteries, paint pots etc. are disposed of appropriately and correctly.
Next you need to decide what to do with the items that you do not wish to take with you to your new home, but are still fully functioning or of use to someone else. You could gift these belongings to friends or family members who may be able to use these items. Alternatively, you could donate your belongings to charity, which may make you feel good since you will be doing your bit for charity.
If you believe that charity begins at home, then you can always try to sell your belongings. The internet is a great way to sell your unwanted belongings. Websites such as eBay are great sites that can be accessed by everyone in many different countries, making it easier for you to get rid of your belongings whilst making some extra cash.
One of the biggest problems you may face is with furniture. If you are moving into a furnished home, you may not have enough space to take your current furniture with you. In some cases, if you are renting, you may be able to negotiate something with the landlord whereby s/he agrees to remove any existing furniture so that you can bring your own. If not, then you will also have to get rid of your unwanted furniture in one of the ways mentioned above.
If your stay in the new accommodation is only temporary, then you could always put your furniture into storage, so that you have access to it when you move to a new place. Alternatively, a family member or friend may offer to store your items in a garage etc. If the helping hand is there, do take it but always remember to offer something in return. It is polite and courteous.
Moving into a smaller home can sometimes cause a few issues, but you have to remember that it is only an issue if you allow it to become one. There is always something that one can do to solve them. So do not allow your belongings to become a problem when you are moving into a smaller home.
Once you have the basics in your new home, any additional items can always be added later.
